ELSAG NORTH AMERICA PLAYS SIGNIFICANT ROLE

 IN OPERATION SAFE STOP DAY

ELSAG technology employed to keep children traveling on school buses safe in New York

Brewster, NY, April 27, 2009„Ÿ ELSAG North America was recognized as an integral part by the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) on April 23 in commemoration of their statewide OPERATION SAFE STOP DAY.  This day is dedicated to alerting the public about the dangers that illegal passing presents to our children and to motorists who illegally pass school buses across the state.

The NYAPT joined the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) in announcing last Thursday that school buses in three New York school districts will be equipped with ELSAG mobile license plate recognition systems for the remainder of the school year.  This camera system automatically captures license plate images of vehicles that illegally pass a school bus when the stop sign is in use.  This demonstration project will include public education and issuance of formal warnings to violators.

The current project will see the Bethlehem Central School District, the Brewster Central School District and the Canandaigua City School District employ ELSAG North America’s license plate recognition system on their school buses.  The ELSAG system is similar to their Mobile Plate Hunter-900 (MPH-900) units, which are employed by many police departments throughout the state for various different applications.

“We are proud of our technology and pleased to see it being used for this critical application,” said Mark Windover, president and CEO of ELSAG North America.  “Keeping our communities safe is our number one objective, and keeping our children safe is absolutely imperative.”

ELSAG North America’s systems are currently employed by over 500 agencies in 33 states across the U.S.  Their systems have many applications and have aided in everything from traffic safety and intelligence gathering to the apprehension of stolen vehicles, to tax collection and even aiding in the conviction of a murderer in Fishkill, NY.
