Howard County police have arrested a man who was operating a stolen car and who was wanted for two armed bank robberies. The weekend arrest is thanks to a hit from a license plate reader.
Zachary Scott Shanaberger, 30, of 21 John Street in Westminster, was arrested on Sunday at Lisbon Park and Ride in the 15900 block of Frederick Road in Woodbine. He was sleeping in a 2003 Honda Accord reported stolen in another jurisdiction on Oct. 28.
The suspect was arrested without incident. Located in his vehicle were a knife, as well as suspected heroin and drug paraphernalia.
Shanaberger is charged in Howard County with motor vehicle theft, drug possession, drug paraphernalia possession, carrying a concealed dangerous weapon, unauthorized removal of property and theft.
The suspect was located after an officer on routine patrol utilized a license plate reader to scan the plates of the vehicles parked on the lot. The reader alerted the officer that the Honda in which Shanaberger was sleeping was reported stolen.
Howard County police have four automated license plate readers, which are mounted to patrol cars and can rapidly scan license plates of parked or moving vehicles. The readers alert officers to vehicles that have been reported stolen.
Shanaberger is being held at Howard County Detention Center on $250,000 bond. He has been served with warrants from two other jurisdictions for armed bank robberies in March. Those warrants will serve as detainers.
